Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) has been founded in 2002 and aims to connect underserved communities of India in an effort to bridge the digital divide and equip them with access to information.
Founded and run by former Software company executive Osama Manzar, DEF has its presence in 150 locations spread across 80 districts of 22 states in India through Community Information Resource Centres (CIRCs).
DEF finds sustainable ways to empower communities in rural and remote locations of India with digital literacy, digital tools, and last mile connectivity as a way to achieve greater socio-economic equality. With the help of a community of team members and the support of Donors such as European Union, Google, Microsoft, Vodafone, UNESCO among others, DEF India has managed to:
- Open 345 resource centers
- Train 15 000 people in digital content creation and dissemination
- Digitally empower 20 000+ artisans
- Digitally enable 2 500 000 women
